Interpreting a Leaf Tissue Analysis

What leaf tissue analysis measures
A soil test measures the nutrient reserves held by the soil — what is theoretically available to the plant. Leaf tissue analysis measures what the plant is actually incorporating into its tissue at the time of sampling. The gap between the two is where many unexplained yield problems live.
Uptake is not automatic. A soil may hold adequate phosphorus, but if pH is too high, phosphate is fixed by calcium and iron and the plant cannot reach it. A soil may be well-fertilized, but a Pythium infection in the root system may prevent uptake of almost everything. Leaf analysis makes these invisible constraints visible.
Sampling protocol — getting it right
Leaf position
Every lab and every crop has a defined sampling leaf. Deviating from that standard produces results that cannot be compared against reference values — the analysis becomes meaningless. The investment in the test is wasted if the protocol is not followed.
Growth stage
Active, unconstrained growth produces the most informative tissue. Sampling during a drought period, after irrigation failure or in the week following a chemical application gives tissue chemistry that reflects stress, not the underlying nutrition. Wait for the plant to return to normal growth before sampling.
Compositing
A single leaf from a single plant is not representative. Collect 15-20 leaves of the same standard position from different plants across the block. Mix them into one composite sample before sending to the lab. This averages out individual plant variation and gives a reliable picture of the block’s nutritional status.
Reading the results
The lab report presents measured values alongside reference ranges for each element. The reference ranges are a starting point, not a final answer — they are typically broad and not crop-variety or site-specific.
More informative than any single value is the pattern:
- Multiple micronutrients low: Common cause is high pH restricting uptake broadly — look at the soil test pH.
- Potassium high, magnesium low: Classic antagonism — excess K suppresses Mg uptake regardless of Mg supply.
- Calcium adequate in soil, low in leaf: Check whether irregular irrigation or low transpiration is limiting calcium movement into the plant.
Integrating leaf analysis with the programme
Leaf tissue analysis is the most powerful mid-season calibration tool for a fertilization programme. The programme was built on soil test data and expected crop behaviour; the leaf analysis shows whether the crop is responding as predicted. When the data diverges from the plan, the analysis tells you where to look — not what to spray.
Frequently asked questions
Which leaf should I sample?
Each crop has a standard sampling leaf defined by age and position — typically the most recently fully expanded leaf or a leaf three to five positions below the growing tip. Sampling too young or too old a leaf produces values that do not match reference ranges, making the result uninterpretable. Follow the lab's or the crop's specific protocol.
I have a soil test — why would I also need leaf analysis?
The soil test tells you what reserves the soil holds; it cannot tell you what the plant is absorbing. Uptake is affected by pH, root health, antagonisms between minerals and soil moisture. When the soil shows adequate reserves but the plant looks deficient, leaf analysis isolates the cause.
What is a hidden deficiency?
A hidden (latent) deficiency is a nutrient shortage severe enough to suppress yield and quality but not yet severe enough to produce the classic visible symptoms — yellowing, necrosis, deformation. The plant grows more slowly, fruit is smaller, colour is weaker, disease susceptibility rises. Leaf analysis detects this before visible symptoms appear.
When is the best time to sample?
Sample during active, normal growth — not under drought, waterlogging or immediately after a spray application. Mid-season, once the crop has established its rhythm, gives the most informative result. Sampling under stress produces values that reflect stress chemistry, not the underlying nutritional status.
The leaf test shows very low iron — should I apply foliar iron straight away?
Not necessarily. Low iron in leaf tissue can mean insufficient iron in the fertilization programme, but it more often means uptake is blocked — commonly by high soil pH or waterlogging. Applying foliar iron treats the symptom; correcting pH or drainage addresses the cause. Check the soil test and root zone before reaching for the sprayer.
