Why soilless for vegetables?
Greenhouse vegetable production on the same soil year after year accumulates root disease pressure, salinity and declining structure. Substrate systems break this cycle: the root environment is renewed or sterilised each season, giving the crop a clean start. This alone can restore yield levels in houses where soil-borne disease had become the limiting factor.
Beyond disease control, the case for substrate production in tomato, pepper and cucumber rests on three additional factors: higher and more predictable yield per unit area, more precise water and nutrient management, and a more consistent product for buyers who need uniform quality.
Substrate choice and preparation
Coir-perlite blend
Coconut coir provides excellent water retention; perlite improves aeration and drainage. A 70% coir / 30% perlite ratio is a common starting point, adjusted for the irrigation system and target drainage percentage.
Before planting: Raw coir can contain elevated potassium and residual salts from processing. Two to three litres of flush per bag normalises EC before the season starts. Check the flush water EC — planting into an unacceptably high starting EC handicaps the crop from day one.
Rockwool
Slabs and cubes are the commercial standard in high-tech tomato production. Uniform dimensions allow precise plant spacing and drip placement. Rockwool holds a large volume of water relative to its weight; irrigation intervals can be longer than with coarse perlite mixes. Over-watering remains the more common error — the slab retains moisture even when it looks dry on the surface.
Production management by growth stage
Transplant to early root establishment: Low EC (1.5-2.0 dS/m), high phosphorus to drive root expansion. Irrigation events are short and frequent — wetting the immediate root zone without flooding the slab.
Vegetative growth: EC raised to 2.5-3.0 dS/m; nitrogen-forward programme. Drain percentage targeted at 20-25%. Monitor drain EC weekly — if drain consistently exceeds applied EC by more than 1.0 dS/m, reduce frequency or perform a leaching irrigation.
Flowering and fruit set: Potassium raised; nitrogen reduced to avoid delaying the generative shift. Calcium supply closely monitored to prevent blossom-end rot. This transition is where many programmes lose calibration — act on the data, not the calendar.
Harvest and maturation: Potassium-high programme; EC can be raised moderately to increase fruit density and Brix. The margin between managed EC stress (quality improvement) and unmanaged water stress (yield reduction) is narrow and crop-specific.
Frequently asked questions
Which substrate is recommended for tomato?
Rockwool slabs are the most widely used in commercial tomato production: high water-holding capacity, good aeration and standardised dimensions simplify the system. A coir-perlite blend (70-30 or 60-40) is the alternative — lower cost and reusable across seasons with proper treatment between crops. Substrate choice directly affects irrigation frequency and EC management.
Can substrate be reused between seasons?
Coir and perlite can be reused for multiple seasons; thorough leaching to remove salt build-up and disinfection between seasons are required. Rockwool can also be reused, but root debris and pathogen management are more demanding. The replacement cycle is set by production capacity and observed disease pressure, not by a fixed number of seasons.
Why is blossom-end rot more common in soilless systems?
In substrate, calcium transport depends entirely on irrigation uniformity and transpiration. Soil buffering does not exist. Irregular irrigation, high EC or reduced transpiration from low air humidity interrupts calcium supply directly and immediately. Uniform irrigation timing, appropriate EC and adequate ventilation are the effective prevention.
Why does pre-wetting the substrate matter before planting?
Dry coir or new rockwool blocks must be fully saturated before transplanting. Planting into dry substrate stresses roots before they can establish contact with moisture. For coir specifically, pre-season flushing also removes any accumulated potassium and salts that raw coir may contain — normalising the starting EC before the first transplant.
Does drain management differ between pepper, cucumber and tomato?
The principles are the same but the calibration differs. Cucumber prefers a consistently moist root zone and tolerates slightly lower drain percentages. Pepper has a more sensitive root zone — excessive moisture raises Phytophthora risk. In practice, drain percentage and EC tracking are the universal monitoring tools across all three crops.
